Eid Al Adha is popularly known as ‘feast of sacrifice’ celebrated by Muslims across the world that falls on the tenth day in the final month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar, Dhu-al-Hijjah. The occasion marks the conclusion of Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. This year the festival is likely to fall on July 9th. Eid Al Adha or ‘Grand Eid’ lasts for four days and commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to obey Allah’s command to sacrifice his son. The UAE’s Federal Authority for Government has announced a four-day Eid Al Adha holiday for the public sector.
Eid Celebrations
The festival also known as Bakrid is the most important feast in the Muslim calendar. During this festival, Muslim families and friends come together to pray and give alms, especially in the form of sacrificed animal meat which might be a lamb, goat, sheep, cow or camel. The animal must be in good health condition and over an older age to be slaughtered in a halal-friendly, Islamic way.
For the good deed of the sacrifice, every person has to contribute a portion. Since a goat equals one portion, a big family would go for a camel or cow for the celebration of the feast. Families then divide the meat into portions, one part will be enjoyed along with family & friends, the second part will be distributed to close ones who are not present at the gathering and the final share will be given to the poor. Families that have not conducted a sacrifice will often purchase halal meat for their meal and donate money to the charity instead.
The Muslim families wake up early in the morning, take a shower and traditionally dress in new clothes. The celebration of Eid Al Adha begins with a special prayer, ‘Salat al-Eid’ followed by a sermon called a Khutbah. This is then followed by animal sacrifice. The rest of the day is devoted to visiting the houses of friends, neighbours and close ones. They exchange the Arabic greeting, ‘Eid Mubarak’ and swap gifts.
